Shopian, Feb 22, KNT: Women in a hamlet are being forced to travel to adjacent villages in South Kashmir’s Shopian district to fetch potable water.

Women carrying utensils and pitchers were seen walking by foot amid snowfall in Sedow village of Shopian to fetch water for their families.

Locals told news agency Kashmir News Trust that from past six months they have been facing acute water shortage but the concerned department has been doing nothing to mitigate their sufferings.

“After repeatedly visiting the concerned department, a water tanker has started arriving in the village from the past couple of days. Taps are completely nonfunctional in this village,” said a villager, Abdul Rehman.

Every morning, Sedow village women are seen marching to fetch water from adjacent villages. Mostly, it is the women and children who take the
burden of carrying water. Villagers said that almost
half of the far-flung villages of Shopian are reeling under the crisis.

“It is very painful to see our mothers and daughters fetching water from far-off places in this snowfall. We request District Development Commissioner Shopian to look into the matter and direct the concerned department to resolve the issue,” the villagers said. (KNT)
