Australian cricket star Andrew Symonds dies aged 46 in car crash

Former Australia cricketer Andrew Symonds died in a car crash at the age of 46.

Australian cricket legend Andrew Symonds has died in a car accident in Queensland, Australian media reported on Sunday.

Symonds played 26 Test matches for Australia and scored two centuries. He played 198 One-Day Internationals for Australia and was a part of two World Cup wins.

Andrew Symonds was reportedly involved in a single vehicle incident in Hervey Range, 50 km from Townsville on Saturday night, May14.

The Australian cricket board is shocked and saddened by the news of Andrew Symonds’ passing.

Cricket Australia Chairperson Lachlan Henderson said, “Australian cricket has lost another of its very best. Andrew was a generational talent who was instrumental in Australia’s success at World Cups and as part of Queensland’s rich cricket history. He was a cult figure to many who was treasured by his fans and friends”.

“On behalf of Australian cricket, our deepest sympathies are with Andrew’s family, team-mates, and friends,” said Lachlan Henderson.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said, “Andrew was a much-loved and admired cricketer in Australia and around the world. He was a prodigious talent from an early age in Queensland with his clean ball-striking ability, shrewd spin bowling and brilliant fielding”.

“He will be sadly missed by the Australian cricket community and particularly his very close friends at the Queensland Bulls where he was a popular and much-admired team-mate and friend. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this devastatingly sad time,” said Nick Hockley.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) took to Twitter to confirm his death and mourn the loss of the cricket legend.

Cricket fans all over the world are mourning the loss of the cricket legend. Former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar also wrote on Twitter to express his condolences over the incident.

Andrew Symonds hit his first domestic century in a match between Queensland and Tasmania in 1996. It was his 10th match playing for Queensland. The match was held in Australia’s Gabba cricket stadium. Watch here.
